| My career in photography came late in life—at the age of 51. My husband and I had become good friends with the Postneshin (head) of the Mevlevi Order of America (Whirling Dervishes) and his wife. My husband participated in the turning at Zikrs (moving prayers) but I was not interested in participating. At that time I was just beginning to work with digital photography. The photography gave me a perfect platform to participate with the Sufis that was comfortable for me. The Sufis were a perfect subject for a beginner in photography—challenging me even more than the usual learning curve. A flash can not be used or you upset their turning. Imagine turning in a circle for some time and having a flash go off in your sight; it would disorient you completely. Whatever lighting is available in the facilities the turning takes place is the lighting for that shoot. The nature of the circle prohibits me shooting from the middle and all shots must be taken from outside the circle; yet, the inside circle needs to be photographed. From this exciting beginning my work expanded into water sports, photographing the art of kite surfing for a how-to book. Then into doing portfolio work for my husband’s building company, Betsill Brothers Construction. Attending workshops such as “The Art of the Photo Essay” with David Alan Harvey in Santa Fe, and “On Assignment in San Miguel” with the same instructor hones my skills and transforms my skills. With three daughters and 8 grandchildren around me I am blessed with great subjects and enjoy documenting our family gatherings and celebrations. Always seeking to increase my skills I look for projects that challenge me and increase my skill level. A book is in the works; although a publishing date is no more than a simple wish in the wind at this point. I hope you enjoy the photos featured on this site. Lee Guthrie |
